Choosing a password

A simple way to choose a password that's both strong and memorable is to use four random words. A helpful memory trick is to make up a story to fit them.

Password hygiene

  1. Don't re-use passwords between sites—especially important ones. You don't know who'll take good care of it and who might lose it. Data breaches aren't always detected or reported.
  2. Turn on two-factor authentication where supported—such as for Gmail and Dropbox.
  3. Delete any emails asking you to 'reset your password'. These are invariably phishing. Banks never ask people to do this.
  4. Don't follow links from emails, but use URLs you have bookmarked or typed yourself. Check the URL looks correct and begins 'https:'
